My Arcitecture

Just some arcitecture ive been working on today! My material manager seems to have erased ALL the materials in the library, so sadly no decent renders...=(

EDIT 11/04/2010: Added My Disney Palace

My Knight

Here is a Knight that I modelled using the image below. I wanted some practice modelling from photographs and pre-exisiting images. I thought I would give this a go, as I wasnt able to make a knight when i first made my other chess pieces. - "I'm improving"

I haven't applied any materials, its not perfect, still plenty to improve..but im happy.

Medieval Castle Mockup

Here's a Castle mockup that ive been working on today. I was considering a castle style lair for the project next term, so this was great practice! I might finish it off tomorrow...but i'll most likely start something new to see what else I can do. Asides from that, this took HOURS and I doubt I could even go back to it if i wanted. ^^

3DS Worksheets

Thought I would get ahead, and make a start on the worksheets for the Virtual Environments project i start after Easter. The exercises are designed to help teach you the basics of the program so that in the end you can create your own 3-room SUPER HERO LAIR!

King & Queen

Okay, so everyone always does the chess pieces...
Asides from that, the actual construction of these 2 pieces taught me a HUGE fundamental of using the program. I should now be able to 3D conceptualize ANY basic shape or image that I can draw on computer. (This is where my wacom tablet shoud come in handy) =P
It was also an introduction to lighting!

Took me a while to get this looking nice but im happy. =)

Rubiks Cube

So, the first 3D model that I ever made was a rubiks cube back in 6th form, using a program called Cobalt. I decided to give it another go using 3ds Max and see what i could do:

Now Im pretty pleased with how this has come out considering it's only my 2nd model. It's not perfect, (screwed up on the colours in one image) but the more time I spend on the program...the more im learning...so it's all good!

After you've played around with it for a while, it's reasonably intuitive. =)

Once again, it's been spiced up in PS. ;)

The making of:

Ice Cubes

So I downloaded the Autodesk 3DS Max trial last night, and I thought I would give something a go. I found a tutorial online about how to make some icecubes...so paired with photoshop I was able to make my first ever 3DS MAX model:

I had WICKED fun making this, so stay tuned for a LOT more models over the next few days / weeks.

The orginal tutorial can be found here.

ShOOting Equipment

Right, so I think its a good idea if i post on the gd'ol blog what equipment we will be needing for our shoot this week. As producer it's my job to organise everything so not only is it good reflective practise, but hopefully it will also help me clear up any doubts and highlight any problems:

  • Z1 and Tripod
  • K6 Microphone
  • Rycote and Fluffy
  • XLR Cable
  • Headphones
  • Boom Pole
  • Jib
  • Reflector
  • Handy Jib
  • Mini Panasonic
ps. I cant stand Moving Image...

3D Work

So ive never used 3D Studio Max before, but i have worked in 3D.
At A-Level I used a program called Cobalt to create all my prototypes and rapid models.
The following 2 screenshots are taken from my project showing the final renders for a flat-packed table and chair product:

Storyboarding

So, theres this program called Celtx that we have been told to use to create everything we will need to help us shoot this footage; Ticket!
After finalising our script and importing it into the program, I had to create a storyboard using images to show camera shots etc.

Moving Image!

Ill type this up later...

Visual Essay Flash Experimentation

Title says it all...
We were all asked by our form tutor to create a mockup for the visual essay in whatever style / presentation method that we chose.
I have decided to do my essay in flash, so thought I would try out a basic structure and work from there.

Essay Abstract

This essay summarises my decision to choose virtual environments as my chosen pathway for year two. I will achieve this by identifying my interests, and demonstrating my knowledge through the use images and various media. Alongside this, I have included three practitioners that have influenced my decision, showcasing and commentating their work in reference to my own.

Originally, my focus was primarily on online environments, as I felt I already had a lot of experience and interest in website design and basic coding. Term one introduced me to Adobe Flash, which allowed me to create an interface with some impressive animation and superior interaction to any previous attempt.

However, after viewing the online environment brief I was intrigued, and drawn to something I had little knowledge of before. The work shown to us by year two and three students was influential, and it allowed me the scope to see the sort of material I could be creating in the future. The whole process of development from paper concept drawings to a full working 3D model is great…and the hours required sitting solo in front of a computer definitely suits my working style.

The aim from this piece of media is to show my passion, interest, vision and to demonstrate my commitment to virtual environments for the following two years.
